Who are the Lunataks?
When ThunderCats expanded its universe in season two, it introduced a whole new threat: the Lunataks, a group of six powerful and evil beings originating from the moons of the planet Plun-Darr. Unlike the Mutants —more rudimentary creatures that responded to Mumm-Ra—the Lunataks were so fearsome that the Mutants themselves were afraid of them. Their arrival turned the Third Earth conflict into a three-sided war, and that's why they complement our story so well. Top 10 villains of the series.
History and Origin
The Lunataks came from the moons orbiting Plun-Darr, the same world the Mutants came from. Some time ago they had arrived on Third Earth and faced Mumm-Ra, the eternal villain. The mummy sorcerer managed to defeat them and imprisoned inside a volcano, where they remained trapped for a long time.
Their return occurs when Mumm-Ra orders the Mutants to free them, on the condition that they serve his cause against the cats. But the Lunataks had plans of their own: instead of obeying, they formed a "third column" independent. They settled in the Dark Side region and built a massive floating fortress called Sky Tomb (the Celestial Tomb), from which they attacked the ThunderCats, the Mutants and any inhabitant of Third Earth alike. That independence made them even more dangerous and unpredictable.

The shadow of the classical past stirs again: at the Annecy Festival on June 22, 2026, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation officially confirmed a new animated film ThunderCats. To date there is no director, voice cast or release date announced, and it has not been defined whether it will be in 2D, CGI or a hybrid. Nothing yet indicates which characters from the extensive classic cast will appear on screen.
