Who is Grune the Destroyer?
Among all the enemies of cosmic cats, few are as disturbing as Growls the Destroyer: a villain who was not born of evil, but was one of the good ones. Grune was a Thunderian of the saber-toothed tiger race, an elite warrior who once fought shoulder to shoulder with Thundera's finest. Its most recognizable physical feature is that it only retains a tusk —the other lost in combat—, a detail that makes it unmistakable. His story is, at its core, that of a fall: that of a hero devoured by ambition. If you are interested in the great antagonists of the series, this profile complements our Top 10 ThunderCats Villains.
History and Origin
Grune was, in his youth, a Thunderian with all the superhuman abilities that title grants. His great-grandfather even served as Lord of the ThunderCats, so noble blood ran through his veins. For years it was a great friend and comrade in arms Jaga, the wise mentor of Lion-O. But ambition and thirst for power ended up corrupting his heart. Grune came to despise the Thunderian people: he considered them unworthy of being protected by the ThunderCats and wanted, instead, to rule them as a god.
His desire led him to try a military coup d'état. Jaga intervened, and after a tough confrontation Grune was defeated. As punishment for his betrayal, he was Thundera exile inside a glass capsule launched into space. That star prison ended, centuries later, reaching Third Earth. There Grune spread terror among the natives, who gave him the nickname by which we remember him today: the destroyer. He eventually died and became a spirit, and upon discovering that the ThunderCats lived in that same world, he returned as one of their deadliest enemies.
