Who are the ThunderCats Mutants?
In the universe of ThunderCats (1985-1989), the feline heroes would be nothing without their implacable enemies. Long before Mumm-Ra, the Eternal, became their main threat on Third Earth, the ThunderCats already had to face a group of ruthless aliens known simply as the Mutants. Slithe, Monkian, Jackalman and Vultureman are the four great secondary villains of the series: ambitious, selfish, clumsy at times... but always dangerous.
Originating from the planet Plun-DarrHome to bestial races that for centuries bore a fierce enmity with the noblecats of Thundera, the Mutants survived the destruction of their homeworld and pursued the ThunderCats through space. Their objective was clear: to take over the Sword of Omen and annihilate the last feline survivors. What they didn't count on was that Third Earth also housed a much greater power: Mumm-Ra himself.
Origin: from Plun-Darr to Third Earth
The Mutants belong to different species originating from Plun-Darr: reptilians (Slithe), apes (Monkian), jackals (Jackalman) and vultures (Vultureman). For generations, these warring races lived in constant conflict with the ThunderCats of Thundera. When both planets faced their almost simultaneous destruction, the Mutants launched a final attack against the ThunderCats ship in full interstellar flight, managing to severely damage it but without achieving the annihilation they sought.
The ThunderCats ship crash-landed on Third Earth, and the Mutants followed. There, without the support of Plun-Darr or his supreme leader Ratar-O, the four Mutants forged an alliance of convenience with Mumm-Ra: he would provide them with power and resources; they would act as their shock forces against the ThunderCats. An alliance marked from day one by mutual betrayal and collective incompetence.
The four Mutants: complete profiles
Slithe — The Reptilian Leader
Slithe He is the most dangerous and intelligent of the four. Of reptilian race, he has a tactical mentality and excessive ambition. Although he nominally serves Mumm-Ra and later Ratar-O, he always looks for a way to personally benefit from every situation. His distinctive whistle when speaking — especially his famous "Yesss!" — became one of the most recognizable sounds in the series. Slithe does not hesitate to sacrifice his companions if it guarantees his survival or the success of his mission. He is undoubtedly the Mutant with the greatest leadership capacity, although that is not saying much given the chaotic group he leads.
Monkian — The Ape Spy
Monkian He is the ape-like Mutant, specialized in reconnaissance and infiltration tasks. His agility among the treetops allows him to move quickly around Third Earth, and he often acts as the group's advanced scout. Despite his apparent strategic usefulness, Monkian is also notoriously cowardly: at the slightest sign of real danger, he usually flees or looks for excuses not to fight. Its main weapon is a circular shield that it can also throw, and it has its own aerial vehicle, the skycutter. His cowardice is so well known that even Slithe frequently humiliates him in front of others.
Jackalman — The Treacherous
jackalman It represents betrayal taken to the extreme. Of jackal stock, this Mutant never misses an opportunity to intrigue against his own companions if he believes he can gain personal advantage. He is, by far, the most cowardly and the most given to internal conspiracies in the group. His plans to betray Slithe and take over leadership are almost a running gag in the series — they always fail miserably. However, when he has no other choice, he can be a brutal and disloyal combatant even on the battlefield. His favorite weapon is a melee club.
Vultureman — The Inventor
Vultureman He is the scientist and technologist of the group. A vulture breed, his analytical mind distinguishes him from the rest of the Mutants, more oriented to brute force. He is capable of building advanced machines and weapons, making him a valuable asset to the group. Vultureman has a more calculating and less impulsive personality than his companions, although he shares basic greed and disloyalty with them. You have access to your own flying vehicle. He was the last to regularly join the group during the first seasons, becoming more prominent from the second.

7 Curiosities about Mutants
- Four races, one destiny: The Mutants represent four distinct warlike species of Plun-Darr that historically hated each other. Their forced alliance is as unstable as it is explosive, and the show constantly exploits their internal conflicts to create comedic and dramatic moments.
- The same actor, two opposite roles: Larry Kenney dubbed both Lion-O (the hero) and Jackalman (the treacherous villain) in English. A vocal feat that many fans did not discover until decades later.
- Bob McFadden, the king of villains: Actor Bob McFadden voiced two Mutants simultaneously: Slithe and Vultureman, as well as other minor characters in the series. His vocal versatility was key in the production.
- They were never the bosses: Despite being the main antagonists of the first seasons, the Mutants were always subordinate to someone: first to Ratar-O, then to Mumm-Ra. This hierarchy of villains was unusual for an 80s animated series.
- Vultureman arrived late: Although he appears in the pilot episode, Vultureman did not have a prominent role until the second season, where his scientific skills became essential to the episodes' plots.
- Plun-Darr resurrected: In the series ThunderCats Ho! (1985-1986), the Mutants attempted to rebuild Plun-Darr's power on Third Earth with the help of Ratar-O, creating some of the most ambitious story arcs in the entire franchise.
- The toy market: LJN Toys produced Slithe, Monkian, and Jackalman action figures for the original ThunderCats line in the 1980s. Vultureman had a figure but it was more difficult to obtain, becoming one of the most sought after pieces by current collectors.

Although there are no official details about the cast or which villains will appear in the film, the Mutants are so integral to the ThunderCats mythology that it would be difficult to imagine a film adaptation that ignores them completely.
